Reading at Hedon Primary School

All children, in all classes will have a school reading book.  These are levelled and culminate in the children moving to be a free reader.

Children should read at least 3 or 4 times per week at home with an adult or, as they move into Key Stage 2, to themselves.

We are delighted to announce that Reception and Year 1 will also be bringing a reading for pleasure book home each week.  This book is for you to share and enjoy reading with your child.  Your child may not be able to read this book themselves.  You might like to make the book a bedtime story or curl up with a hot chocolate on a Saturday night to enjoy it together.  You can read this as many times as your child would like and again record it in their reading record.

We have also purchased all of the books on the 100 books to read before you leave Hedon Primary School.  These are spread out across the classes and can be borrowed as reading books for drop everything and read books.

The number of times your child reads at home will be added up and counted in order to award Hedon Reading Hero bands to your child.  This band system runs across the school and band colours start off a little bit like the karate band colours with white for 15 reads, yellow for 30 reads, orange for 50 reads and green for 70 reads.  They currently go up to 500 reads but may need extending as children in Key Stage 2 exceed expectations.

Children across the school read many time across the week.  Whole class reading takes place daily, children hear their class reading book several time a week and all have a book ready to 'Drop Everything and Read'.  They also enjoy their own reading books and use texts across the curriculum.

We look forward to sharing your child’s reading journey with you.

Thank you for your support at home reading and enjoying texts with your child.
